چکیده

Picture-word interference refers to the fact that when a picture (i.e., line drawing) is presented with a word superimposed, picture-naming latency is longer than when the same picture is presented alone. This phenomenon, like the Stroop phenomenon, seems to be strongly influenced by the nature of the superimposed word. In the present paper the effects of phonetic and orthographic similarity between the word and the picture's name were investigated in order to get a clearer idea of the role these factors play in the picture-naming process. Both orthographic and phonetic similarity were found to facilitate picture naming in comparison to an unrelated word condition although not with respect to a picture alone condition. Further, the data suggest that this facilitation is not an output phenomenon and, as such, can be separated from the response competition processes that lead to the basic interference effect. Instead, the locus of these effects appears to be the name-retrieval process with orthographic and phonetic information from the word aiding in the search for the picture's name. What are the mechanisms involved in the simultaneous processing of two inputs when the observer must respond to only one of those inputs? This question, in many shapes and forms, has been with us at least since the *This research was supported by Grant A6333 from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Orthographic and phonological effects in the picture–word interference paradigm: Evidence from a logographic language

One important finding with the picture–word interference paradigm is that picture-naming performance is facilitated by the presentation of a distractor (e.g., CAP) formally related to the picture name (e.g., “cat”). In two picture-naming experiments we investigated the nature of such form facilitation effect with Mandarin Chinese, separating the effects of phonology and orthography. Significant...

Phonological Codes Constrain Output of Orthographic Codes via Sublexical and Lexical Routes in Chinese Written Production

To what extent do phonological codes constrain orthographic output in handwritten production? We investigated how phonological codes constrain the selection of orthographic codes via sublexical and lexical routes in Chinese written production. Participants wrote down picture names in a picture-naming task in Experiment 1or response words in a symbol-word associative writing task in Experiment 2...

A Connectionist Model for Context Effects in the Picture-Word Interference Task

In the picture-word interference task, two context effects can be distinguished: the semantic interference effect and the orthographic facilitation effect. A theory is described to explain these effects. This theory was implemented in a connectionist model. The model is able to simulate the time courses of the two context effects and their interaction.

Interference between surface form and abstract representation in spoken word perception

The aim of this study was to examine the influence of an abstract code (orthographic and/or morphophonemic) on the perception of the sounds in French spoken words. For this purpose, we used words whose surface phonology was not congruent either with both orthographic and morphophonemic codes or with orthographic code alone. Experiment 1 showed that the processing of spoken word is affected by a...

Teaching adults new words: the role of practice and consolidation.

Semantic and orthographic learning of new words was investigated with the help of the picture-word interference (PWI) task. In this version of the Stroop task, picture naming is delayed by the simultaneous presentation of a semantically related as opposed to an unrelated distractor word (a specific PWI effect), as well as by an unrelated word compared with a nonword (a general PWI effect). This...
